The all-new WHOOP lineup that arrived in May 2025 retired a single flat plan and replaced it with three, running from USD 199 to USD 359 a year. Every tier includes the device, a lifetime warranty while the membership is active, replacement hardware, and free generational upgrades that keep the WHOOP experience current without a fresh purchase. Upgrading is prorated and takes effect immediately, although moving to the top tier requires a hardware swap because the sensing components differ physically.

That structure matters for a reason people underestimate. WHOOP subscriptions are not a licence sitting on top of a device you own. The account is the product, and the WHOOP device is a peripheral attached to it. When you evaluate a plan, you are evaluating a hosted data platform with a strap, not a gadget.

WHOOP One focuses on the training fundamentals

At USD 199 a year, this is the entry point, and it is the correct choice for more people than the ranking set suggests. The WHOOP One membership ships the current-generation hardware with a CoreKnit band and a basic wired charger, and it covers what the platform is genuinely best at: sleep architecture, daily strain, recovery scoring, heart rate variability, VO2 max estimation, step and strength training detection, women’s hormonal insights with menstrual cycle insights, and a haptic alarm.

What it withholds is the interpretive layer. There is no Stress Monitor, no Health Monitor, and no Healthspan. You get the raw physiological picture and the training guidance built on it, without the longevity inference stacked on top.

For anyone running a personal threat model, that omission is a feature rather than a shortfall. This tier keeps the account at the lowest sensitivity level on the platform while still delivering the health and fitness value that made the tracker worth buying.

Start on the One tier

WHOOP Peak adds advanced health signals without medical-grade hardware

WHOOP Peak costs USD 239, a gap of only USD 40, and that gap is where most of the platform’s interpretive value lives. WHOOP One and Peak share the same WHOOP 5.0 device, so the sensor array on your wrist is identical. Everything the extra USD 40 buys is software plus two accessories: the SuperKnit band and a waterproof charger.

The WHOOP Peak membership adds a real-time Stress Monitor that reads nervous system load through HRV fluctuation, and a Health Monitor covering blood oxygen, skin temperature and heart rate against your own baseline. It also opens the advanced health layer the entry tier locks out.

Because Peak membership contains no additional sensing components, the features here are inference rather than measurement. That is the honest line between this tier and the one above it, and it is worth holding onto when the marketing language starts blurring.

Healthspan, WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging

Healthspan is the flagship of this tier and the reason most reviewers land on it. The vendor defines healthspan as the number of years lived in good health, free of chronic disease and functional decline, and the feature reports weekly whether your behaviour is adding to or subtracting from that figure.

Two outputs sit underneath it. The first expresses a physiological age against your chronological one. The second reports how quickly you are ageing relative to the calendar. Both are derived from long-run recovery, sleep and strain data rather than from any new measurement, which is exactly why they run on standard hardware.

Treat both numbers as a trend line, not a diagnosis. Their value is direction of travel over months. Their risk is that a single figure claiming to describe your biological decline is an unusually attractive inference for anyone who wants to price your future.

WHOOP Life, the medical-grade tier, and what “cleared” actually means

WHOOP Life is USD 359 a year and it is the only tier that ships different hardware. The Life membership includes everything in Peak, plus a premium titanium Luxe band and three capabilities that exist nowhere else in the range: an on-demand electrocardiogram, background rhythm monitoring, and a daily blood pressure estimate.

This is also where terminology needs care, because “medical grade” is doing two very different jobs in the same sentence.

Heart Screener and on-demand ECG readings

This is the cleared component. It takes a reading from the wrist, classifies the trace, and produces a report you can send to a clinician. It also provides irregular heart rhythm notifications that run in the background and prompt you to take a reading when the optical sensor detects something that warrants one, which is how it surfaces signs of atrial fibrillation.

The boundaries are stated plainly by the vendor and are worth repeating, because competitors skip them. The function is not intended for people with known arrhythmias other than AFib, is not intended for users under 22, and is not recommended for anyone with a pacemaker, an implantable defibrillator, or another implanted electronic device. Availability is regionally restricted, because clearance is granted jurisdiction by jurisdiction. Check your own market before buying the tier for this reason alone.

Used within those limits it is a genuine cardiovascular health tool. An irregular heart rhythm that appears only intermittently is exactly what a wrist-worn device catches and an annual physical does not.

Blood Pressure Insights after the FDA closeout

This is where the ranking set is out of date, and it is the largest freshness gap available on this keyword.

The US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning letter on 14 July 2025 stating that Blood Pressure Insights was marketed without clearance, and that estimating a user’s blood pressure is inherently associated with diagnosis. WHOOP publicly disputed the position and declined to withdraw the feature. In January 2026 the FDA published updated general wellness guidance that made room for optical blood pressure estimation in the wellness category. On 17 June 2026 the agency issued a closeout letter confirming that, based on changes made to the product and its labelling, it does not intend to enforce device requirements against the modified feature.

Two things follow. The feature is now settled from an enforcement perspective, so buyers no longer need to price in the risk of it being withdrawn. But the closeout is explicitly scoped to the modified product only, and it rests on the feature being a wellness tool. Daily blood pressure insights give you a systolic and diastolic trend, calibrated against a real cuff, and they are useful for spotting drift. They are not a diagnostic instrument and were never cleared as one.

Start on the top tier

WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG: the hardware split

Externally the two units are close to indistinguishable, and both are roughly seven per cent smaller than the previous generation. The difference sits on the underside, where the new WHOOP MG carries a metallic electrode ring around the optical sensor cluster plus a contact point on the side of the case for the finger you rest against it during a reading.

That is the whole of the WHOOP MG hardware advantage, and it is worth being precise about it. Both devices share the same optical sensing platform for heart rate, HRV, blood oxygen and skin temperature. The top unit adds an electrical sensing path that the standard WHOOP 5.0 physically does not have, which is why the top tier requires a device swap rather than a software unlock. No subscription upgrade turns one into the other.

Battery life, the wireless PowerPack and the bands

Both units are rated for 14-day battery life, a substantial jump over the previous generation. The two higher tiers include a waterproof wireless PowerPack for on-the-go charging, which clips over the unit so you never remove it from your wrist. The entry tier’s wired charger is cheaper, harder to lose, and arguably the better travel option.

Improved battery life is usually sold as a convenience story. It is also a quiet security story. The fantastic battery life reviewers keep highlighting means the device spends far less time off your wrist and sitting unattended on hotel desks and gym benches, which is where opportunistic physical access happens.

One compatibility note: the WHOOP MG band is dimensioned differently from the standard band, so accessories are not interchangeable between the two. Confirm fitment before buying spares.

WHOOP 4.0 owners and what does not carry over

If you are upgrading from the previous generation, none of your existing bands, clips or body garments will fit, because the clip and rail system changed. Budget for replacements and treat the old WHOOP hardware as end of life rather than as a spare.

Your tier choice is a data classification decision

Any competent practitioner classifies data before deciding how to protect it. We do it for customer records, for source code, for credentials. Almost nobody does it for the thing strapped to their wrist collecting hundreds of measurements per second, around the clock, in their bedroom.

Read the right-hand column downward. The move from L0 to L3 is not a gentle gradient. L0 tells someone your routine. L3 tells someone you may have a diagnosable heart condition, in a dataset your doctor never touches and your insurer’s privacy obligations do not cover.

That is the real question behind the price gap. Not “is the cardiac layer worth USD 120 a year” but “do I want a clinical-adjacent record of my heart to exist in a consumer account, and if so, is it hardened accordingly”.

Threat modelling the tier you are about to buy

The precedent is well established. In 2018 a published activity heatmap from another fitness platform exposed the layout and movement patterns of military installations worldwide, triggering a Pentagon review of wearable use. In 2024 and 2025 Le Monde demonstrated the same class of exposure again, reaching presidential security details and personnel in conflict zones. In both cases nothing was breached. Ordinary users produced ordinary data, and aggregation did the rest.

WHOOP has no public activity feed of that kind, which removes the most obvious version of the risk. The account, its exports and its integrations remain.

Two things fall out of this. The highest-frequency threats are satisfied entirely by the cheapest tier, so the top tier is not where everyday risk sits. And the top tier is the only one where a compromise reveals something about your health you may not have told your own family.

Where the health insights stop being medically protected

This is the misconception worth correcting before anyone buys the top tier for the cardiac features.

Clinical privacy law in the United States attaches to covered entities and their business associates: providers, insurers, clearinghouses. It does not attach to a consumer wellness vendor because you happened to record something clinically meaningful there. The same waveform enjoys strong statutory protection in a cardiologist’s system and materially weaker protection in a consumer account. Nothing about the data changed. Only the custodian did.

To be fair to WHOOP, its published position is better than much of the category. The company states it does not sell consumer health data, and that personalisation based on health data happens inside the platform rather than feeding third-party advertising. That is a meaningfully stronger commitment than the industry norm.

The gaps sit elsewhere, and they are structural rather than malicious.

The first is de-identified and aggregated data. Like most of the sector, WHOOP reserves the right to use it for research and business purposes. Privacy researchers have argued for years that continuous sensor streams carry persistent individual fingerprints that make genuine anonymisation extremely difficult, and re-identification research has repeatedly supported that position. De-identified is a process, not a guarantee.

The second is third-party telemetry. A class action filed in 2025 alleges that in-app activity and vital signs were transmitted to an undisclosed analytics provider without adequate consent. That matter is unresolved and the allegations are untested, so treat it as an open question rather than a finding. It does illustrate the general point: the tags and toolkits inside a health tracking app are part of your attack surface even when the vendor’s core policy is sound.

The third is the expanding perimeter. Advanced Labs now books clinical blood panels through a major diagnostics provider and pulls results back into the app, and an electronic health record integration lets members connect medical records directly. Each is genuinely useful, and each means the account is no longer a health and wellness log. It is becoming a consolidation point for records that used to live in separate, better-protected systems. Consolidation is convenient for you and equally convenient for anyone who gets in.

Health and performance data in employer-sponsored programmes

If your device is paid for by an employer, a sporting body or a healthcare organisation, the analysis above changes shape.

The vendor’s enterprise offering targets corporate wellness and healthcare organisations, providing administrative dashboards and organisational analytics. The stated norm is that sponsors receive aggregated data, and the privacy policy conditions sharing on your consent. Both statements are reassuring and neither is self-executing. What a sponsor receives is determined by the agreement they signed and the consent you clicked through at enrolment, not by the default described on a public page.

Before enrolling, get three answers in writing. What is the minimum group size below which no reporting is produced. Whether any individual-level data is ever visible to anyone inside your organisation, including occupational health. And what happens to the historical record when you leave.

If those answers are unsatisfactory, buy your own membership. Paying USD 199 yourself to keep this data out of an employment relationship is one of the better value privacy decisions available.

A hardening checklist to run before first sync

Ordered by where each decision is actually made in the setup flow.

  1. Choose the tier deliberately. Decide which sensitivity level you want to exist before the account is created, not after six months of history accumulates.
  2. Use a dedicated email alias. It breaks the join between this account and the rest of your identity in any future credential dump.
  3. Set a unique passphrase in a password manager. Account takeover is the highest-probability threat here by a wide margin, and reuse is how it happens.
  4. Enable the strongest second factor offered, and prefer an authenticator app over SMS. SIM swap is a live technique against consumer accounts.
  5. Decline optional analytics and marketing consent at onboarding. These prompts appear once and default toward acceptance.
  6. Review integrations before connecting anything. Third-party access uses OAuth 2.0 with scoped tokens. Grant only the scopes an app genuinely needs, and revoke access in the WHOOP app the moment you stop using a tool.
  7. Audit connected apps on a calendar reminder. Quarterly is enough. Stale refresh tokens outlive your interest in the app holding them.
  8. Decide separately about WHOOP AI and the coaching layer. Conversational features are useful and they widen what is processed about you. That is a trade, and it should be a conscious one.
  9. Export your history annually and know the deletion path. A full export is available from the app or web dashboard, which is both a portability win and a way to verify what is actually held.

The middle tier is the best balance of capability and exposure. The top one is a clinical decision wearing a pricing decision’s clothing, and it should be bought for a stated clinical reason rather than for completeness.

Whichever you choose, the account matters more than the strap. Classify what you are collecting, harden the identity that holds it, and review what you have connected to it twice a year. That takes fifteen minutes, and it is the part of this purchase nobody else is telling you about.
