No one would like to be in a situation that they need to explain to the management of a firm that their data is lost and that either it cannot be restored, or they would need to resort to an older backup which will mean that the data changes are lost. For this reason, you will need to have the right tool that basically can get you out from any situation and has everything one would need. Does a tool like this exist? Well yes, and we will be reviewing the Stellar Toolkit for Exchange and confirm if this is the only tool to have for all your Exchange Server needs.

Let’s start off with what could go wrong with your Exchange Server. There are a lot of things but for this article we will be listing a few.

  • Sudden loss of power and database are corrupted.
  • Hardware failure and the server suffers damages.
  • Software issues which would render the server unstable.
  • Issues during maintenance and updates.
  • Human error

These things can lead to issues and possible loss of data. As said restoring from backup would lead to data loss, and this is something that no one would want to break to the management. Another option would be to rebuild the server using the recovery mode, but this will not recover the data as it will be damaged, and it will not mount. If case you would lose the server and the backup software and left only with the backup file, what would happen?

Let’s explore this 5 in 1 tool bundle and go through each feature.

Repair EDB and Extract Mailbox

The Repair EDB is is the tool that when you have databases that cannot mount or missing transaction logs. The Extract Mailbox tool does the same thing, but it is to extract or migrate data from a working Exchange Server or a healthy EDB standalone file. I am listing them both at once, since the interface below is the same.

After opening the tool, you will be presented with the screen to point to the EDB file which you would need to open. If you would not be sure, you can use the Find button to look for the EDB files for you. I am talking files because the application can open multiple EDB files at once.

If you are restricted in default temporary location, you can choose your own temporary location.

After a quick or extensive scan, you are presented by the interface which will show the entire structure of the databases and their contents. In the left pane at the bottom, you can change the view from Mail, Calendar, Tasks, Journal and Contacts. The middle pane shows the list of emails in the selected resource along with a full in-line search. The right pane offers a full HTML preview of the items.

Once granularly select the items to recover, you can use the Save button to do the export. In this situation, we will be choosing the Export to Live Exchange as after the re-installation with the recovery mode, we have a fully working Exchange Server with no data. The tool can also be used to export directly to Office 365, featuring automatic mailbox mapping of the source to the destination, parallel exports, and priority exports for the VIP users. It is not limited to user mailboxes only, it can also process user archives, shared mailboxes, disabled mailboxes and public folders.

Convert OST

This is a very useful tool, especially when you are recovering lost data from the sync data from the user computer. This is used in a drastic attempt to recover the data when you would have an IMAP server or Exchange Server and the server is lost along with the backup. There is no way to recover the data. With the Convert OST tool, you will be able to extract the data from the OST file which can be retrieved from the Outlook profile of the users. The process involves attaching the OST file and it will start the conversion.

After this you will be presented with the structure and data.

Then you can granularly extract or migrate the data as below.

The tool allows you to split and filter the extract when exporting to PST file.

Extract From Backup

If you have lost the server and the backup software or you are retrieving data from a decommissioned server backup, you can use this tool. After opening the tool, you need to choose from which you are retrieving the data from. For this scenario, we will be using the VHDX file format.

Then, we can either specify the file to retrieve from, or use the Find button to search for the files automatically.

Depending on the needs, you can run a Quick or Deep Scan.

After this step, you will be presented with the same interface of Repair EDB and Extract Mailbox for the selection of the items to extract and you can export directly to a live Exchange Server, Office 365 and files including PST, HTML, EML, MSG and PDF.

Recover Password

In the case that you have lost access to the server and the password was either lost or changed, you can use the Recover Password tool to regain access to the server. If you would have inherited the server from a merger, then this tool is the ideal way to regain access to the server. You will be presented with an ISO file that you need to boot the server with. After the boot, select the operating system installed.

Follow the instructions on the screen and you will be able to regain access to your server.

Conclusion

We have seen from the above the tools in the bundle along with the possibilities it can be used for. A recovery of an Exchange Server can be a tricky business, especially when you are not prepared. From what we have seen, there are alternative and various tools to help you recover the server, but only Stellar Toolkit for Exchange has all the tools in one application that will literally help you to retrieve, migrated and extract data from your lost Exchange Server, backup, OST files, damaged databases and orphaned databases.
