This post summarizes recent developments in Azure and GitHub, drawing from official announcements. The focus is on enhancements in reliability, security, and functionality. Below are the key updates for each platform.

Azure Updates

Azure has introduced several features aimed at improving performance, data handling, and security.

  • MaxSurge Support in Azure Application Gateway: This allows for provisioning new instances during rolling upgrades without disrupting existing ones, reducing downtime and enhancing availability. It aligns with Azure’s model of creating and verifying new VMs before replacing older versions.
  • Enhanced Search Jobs in Azure Monitor: Asynchronous queries can now span all workspace data, including long-term retention, with support expanding to 100 million results. The interface includes cost previews and parallel processing for handling large datasets efficiently. Date-range restrictions have been removed, and additional KQL features are forthcoming.
  • File Access Logs for Azure NetApp Files โ€“ Generally Available: As of August 2025, this feature provides visibility into file operations across SMB, NFSv4.1, and dual-protocol volumes, logging user identities, operation types, and timestamps. It supports security monitoring, compliance, and data optimization, available in all supported regions without additional configuration.
  • Secure Tunneling to AKS API Servers via Azure Bastion: In preview, this enables direct connections from local machines to private AKS clusters using standard Kubernetes tools like kubectl. It requires no additional software and avoids public exposure. Usage involves Azure CLI commands and is limited to specific Bastion SKUs and roles.
  • Service Groups for Resource Management โ€“ Public Preview: These serve as containers for organizing resources with flexible hierarchies, allowing membership from across tenants and integration with Azure Monitor. They do not inherit RBAC or policies, making them suitable for observability in distributed environments. Accessible via REST API or the Azure portal.
  • BYO Remote MCP Server on Azure Functions โ€“ Early Preview: This supports hosting pre-built MCP servers on Azure Functions with minimal modifications, initially for stateless operations on the Flex Consumption plan. It offers scaling and pay-per-use billing, with samples available for deployment.

GitHub Updates

GitHub’s recent changes emphasize AI integration, security, and migration tools.

  • Agents Panel for GitHub Copilot: This feature permits launching Copilot tasks from any GitHub location using natural language prompts, with progress tracking and PR reviews. It operates in the background and integrates with VS Code and mobile apps. Available in public preview for paid subscribers.
  • Copilot-Generated Commit Messages โ€“ Public Preview: Contextual summaries for changes are generated in the editor on GitHub.com. It is opt-in, quota-free, and supports data residency for organizations and enterprises.
  • Retirement of Copilot Knowledge Bases: Scheduled to begin on September 12, 2025, users should migrate to Copilot Spaces, which provide greater flexibility for content types and sharing. Transition resources are available.
  • Gemini 2.5 Pro in Copilot โ€“ Generally Available: This model enhances code generation and assistance, accessible via selectors in Copilot Chat across platforms. Immediate access for Pro/Pro+ users; administrative enablement required for businesses.
  • Repository Migrations with GitHub-Owned Blob Storage: In public preview, this simplifies uploads by using GitHub’s storage directly, applicable to sources like Enterprise Server and Bitbucket via CLI extensions.
  • Metered Billing for GitHub Enterprise in Visual Studio Subscriptions: This pay-as-you-go option includes license tracking and APIs, with defaults to avoid unintended charges. It is being rolled out progressively.
  • Updated GitHub Actions Policies: These now allow blocking specific actions and enforcing SHA pinning to address dependency risks. Documentation has been revised accordingly.
