Azure Updates January 2024: Security, Performance & Storage

Last Updated on May 22, 2026 by Arnav Sharma

Azure Security Enhancements Lead January 2024 Updates

Microsoft delivered significant Azure platform improvements throughout January 2024, with security and performance enhancements taking center stage. These updates directly impact cloud architects and security professionals managing enterprise workloads across hybrid environments.

The month brought critical updates spanning network security, storage encryption, and identity management. According to Microsoft’s Azure Update blog, January featured 45+ distinct platform improvements across compute, storage, networking, and developer services.

Network Security and Encryption Advancements

Azure Virtual Network Encryption reached General Availability on January 17, 2024. This feature provides native encryption for virtual network traffic, eliminating the need for third-party solutions or complex IPSec configurations. Security architects can now enable encryption with a single configuration parameter.

Customer-managed keys for Azure NetApp Files became generally available on January 11, enabling organizations to maintain complete control over encryption keys. This addresses compliance requirements for industries with strict data sovereignty mandates.

The Trusted Launch support for Premium SSD v2 and Ultra disks launched January 10, combining high-performance storage with advanced security features including Secure Boot and vTPM capabilities.

Storage and Performance Improvements

Storage capabilities expanded significantly across multiple Azure services:

  • Azure Ultra Disk Storage: Extended availability to UK West and Poland Central regions
  • Zone Redundant Storage: Expanded regional coverage for enhanced durability
  • Premium SSD v2: Added Azure Site Recovery support in private preview

Microsoft reported that Ultra Disk Storage now delivers up to 160,000 IOPS and 4,000 MB/s throughput per disk, making it suitable for mission-critical database workloads requiring consistent low latency.

Developer and DevOps Platform Updates

Azure Load Testing received multiple enhancements throughout January. The service now supports Web Driver Sampler plugins for Apache JMeter and can fetch secrets directly from Azure Key Vault with access restrictions. Additionally, support for up to 50 test fail criteria became generally available on January 29.

Azure Arc Visual Studio Code Extension entered public preview on January 11, enabling developers to manage hybrid and multi-cloud resources directly from their development environment. This integration streamlines the development workflow for distributed applications.

The Azure VM Image Builder introduced automatic image creation capabilities on January 23, reducing manual overhead for maintaining standardized VM images across environments.

Kubernetes and Container Platform Enhancements

Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) received substantial updates on January 31, including:

  • Istio add-on: Now supports plug-in certificate authority (CA) integration
  • Node OS API options: Enhanced control over node operating system configurations
  • SSH support control: Ability to disable Secure Shell access for security hardening
  • Outbound type migration: Simplified network configuration changes
  • Kube-reserved resource optimization: Improved resource allocation efficiency

Azure Container Apps added support for additional TCP ports, expanding networking capabilities for containerized applications requiring custom port configurations.

Database and Analytics Service Updates

Database services received significant functionality improvements:

Azure Database for MySQL introduced an Import feature for Single to Flexible Server migrations on January 17. This addresses a common migration challenge faced by organizations modernizing their database infrastructure.

Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL added customer-managed keys (CMK) and PgAudit capabilities, enhancing security and compliance monitoring. The service also introduced read replica support in specialized regions.

Azure Data Explorer expanded with new geospatial capabilities on January 23 and enhanced graph-match KQL operators in public preview on January 24. According to Microsoft, these improvements support complex analytical queries across geographic datasets.

API Management and Integration Features

Azure API Management introduced Circuit Breaker and Load Balancer capabilities in public preview on January 22. These features enhance API reliability by implementing fault tolerance patterns and traffic distribution mechanisms.

The platform also received updates to Azure API Center with improved discovery and governance features for API portfolios across enterprise environments.

Monitoring and Business Continuity Enhancements

Azure Monitor introduced Prometheus community-recommended alerts in public preview on January 31. This integration brings industry-standard monitoring practices to Azure-managed Prometheus deployments.

Azure Business Continuity Center achieved global availability on January 30, providing centralized visibility into backup and disaster recovery operations across all Azure regions.

Azure Site Recovery added Cross Region Restore support for PostgreSQL backups, enabling geographic disaster recovery scenarios for database workloads.

Regional Expansion and Service Retirement

Azure expanded its global footprint with Israel Central and Italy North regions added to Azure HDInsight on January 30. This expansion supports data residency requirements and reduces latency for regional workloads.

Importantly, Microsoft announced the retirement of Cloud Services (classic) deployment model on August 31, 2024. Organizations still using this legacy service must migrate to Azure Cloud Services (extended support) or alternative modern compute options.

Programming Language and Runtime Support

Azure Functions added Java 21 support on Linux on January 31, enabling developers to leverage the latest Java language features and performance improvements. The platform also introduced distributed tracing v2 for Durable Functions, enhancing observability for complex workflows.

A new major version of the Durable Functions extension became available, including improved scalability and reliability for stateful function orchestrations.
